Creative England’s Role in Ackley Bridge

Creative England is thrilled to announce Channel 4’s long awaited return to 8pm week night drama with ‘Ackley Bridge’, which debuted on Wednesday 7th June.

The show sees an all-star cast, boasting names such as Jo Joyner, Paul Nicholls, Arsher Ali, Liz White, Sunetra Sarker, Adil Ray, Poppy Lee Friar and Amy Leigh Hickman.

Filming in Yorkshire

Creative England worked closely with the production, implementing regional support and providing the primary filming location; a former school near Halifax. The school provided the main film set, and former classrooms and school offices were also transformed into production offices, edit suites and costume and make-up departments. CE Filming Partners Calderdale Council and Leeds City Council were involved in providing filming permissions during the shoot which took place January – March 2017 and Filming also took place in Calderdale and Leeds and the surrounding areas.

Creative England contacted schools and local youth groups in order to lay the foundation for work experience placements and new opportunities for the surrounding community to get involved as ‘film extras’, engaging local young people to be part of the show as much as possible.

"We’re so pleased that we found our home for Ackley Bridge in Yorkshire.  We searched for our school across the whole of the north of England, and Halifax provided not just the school building, but a fantastic hub for production.  It has allowed us to bring our fictional world to life with veracity and punch, it looks great on screen, and we've enjoyed real collaboration with schools, youth groups, businesses and organisations from the surrounding area in putting it together."

George Ormond, Executive Producer, Ackley Bridge, The Forge Entertainment

CE also facilitated a good working relationship between Producers at The Forge and Calderdale Council by arranging a series of meetings early stages of preparation during 2015.

"Yorkshire is once again brought to our screens in Channel 4’s new contemporary landmark drama series - Ackley Bridge is bold, intelligent and relevant.  I am delighted The Forge has returned to the region following the recent success of National Treasure which also filmed in Yorkshire.  This is testament to the fact that Yorkshire continues to offer a creative environment perfect for engaging and thought provoking drama production.”

Chris Hordley, Production Liaison Manager, Yorkshire & East Midlands, Creative England

Creative England assisted with local crewing from the outset, highlighting a range of regionally based freelance crew and facilities companies, ensuring productivity was at the forefront of the production throughout.

What is it about?
